Mothers Are Like Angels
This article is a reprint from a speech presented by Ms Najah Haqiqah at the Annual Pre-Mother's Day Celebration hosted by Mrs. Lee Omar at Masjid Al-Shareef in Long Beach, CA. This year's theme was "Mother's Are Like Angels.
"I was both humbled and excited to be given the opportunity to give a you a few words on today' s theme – Mothers are like angels. When I first came to this program a few years ago with my friend Maryam Shabazz, I was really impressed. It was such a loving and harmonious atmosphere. I want to thank Allah for giving Sister Lee Omar, no today we are all mothers. So I thank Allah APD for giving Mother Lee the idea to continue this tradition, the stamina and the skills to make this dream come true for us.
Again thanking Almighty Allah To whom all praise is due for creating this great life for us to live as muslims and for rewarding us with special character traits or qualities which we can also call attributes.
In fact a few years ago, I wrote one called A Mother’s Worth. I brought it back today in case anyone would want a copy.
I’ll be sitting right over there after the program autographing them for as longs as I have them. I think I brought 20. Take it home and frame it and give it to a mother or a grand mother on mother’s day.
Mothers Are Like Angels
When think about it, Mothers are like angels, really. Not only has Allah APD created this great life for us to live as muslims, women have been rewarded with qualities or special character traits or which we can also call them attributes that are angelic in nature.
Mothers have been given these special attributes beyond those of just being female, feminine or womanly. Mothers have be given the attribute or quality of aiding in the process of creation. She is further endowed with the attributes of nurturing and patience. Among a mother’s great values are her loving kindness which is sometimes followed with tough love. A mother is also understanding, and when it really counts she accepts us with all our faults. A mother encourages us and motivates us to be the best we can be in this world.
I could name so many more attributes that ALLAH Almighty has given mothers, but that would take most of the day.
No wonder when we think of mothers, especially good mothers, our thoughts often turn to beautiful flowers like red roses and angels. Only a mother can give so much that it calls up the highest of feelings within our very souls when we think of her and what she means to us.
It doesn’t take us long to figure out that we are living with an angel. Only an angelic person can do the things that mothers do, and do them with a smile.
Many songs have been written about mothers. Many poems have also been written about mothers.
You know what I think? I think no higher honor has been paid to any species in this creation than entrusting mothers with the function of raising human beings which helps to expand creation. Imagine that Allah APD thought so much of her as a part of creation that she was honored with the task of not only giving birth to but raising man.
If mothers take it upon themselves to improve the life that has been entrusted to them to nurture, then the world is so much better for it. This is not an easy decision. Nor does it go like--just because you gave birth you are a mother certified. That is only the beginning, the commitment which is no easy part within itself, but it is what comes later, down through the years that makes the mother’s angelic qualities noticeable. It is the patience and perseverance that makes a mother shine.
It is that mother; that angelic woman who feeds you and rocks you, and sings to you and teaches you about the world in which we live.
Some of us say. My mother sacrificed for me and perhaps she did in your mind, but as a mother speaking for other mothers what we do or don’t do for our children is not about sacrifice. It is not always about duty. It is some deep sense within that makes us know that if we do this job the way that we think Allah would want us to, then the world we live in will be a better place.
Every mother has looked at her newborn or the child she is raising and questioned herself saying “I wonder if I have the authority, maternal tenderness or affection or just plain guts to do what it takes to raise someone who can think for him or herself, someone who can earn a good living and create a good home for his/her family; someone who will learn the rules and know how to obey them?”
It takes a mother to figure those things out because they may be different for each of her children.
Let’s think about the character of an angel.
First angels are given tasks or duties by Allah APD. Mothers are given tasks by Allah.
Historically Angels bring the news. They announce and bring messages from Allah to man. Mothers bring the news or messages that teaches us how to live in this world. If you do not hear her godly message life can take on the condition of hell right here on earth.
Angels have a supernatural effect. They are associated with the event call miracles. In stories, and in paintings and especially holy books Angel are pictured as having a heavenly glow as if they just left the presence of Allah.
Now just think about seeing a new mother in full bloom or with her new baby. No angel can smile so sweet or reflect such a radiant angelic glow.
Mothers are known for getting things done against the odds, without enough help or money and certainly not enough time. She does this so often she has gotten the nickname superwoman for her angelic supernatural powers.
Mothers are the human miracle workers. How many times has her prayers and watchful care soothed a fever or distressed stomach or tooth ache.
Angels protect us by warning us and guiding us. Isn’t that what mothers do when they caution us on our behavior, choosing our friends, or where we hang out?
So the jury is in. Mothers are like angels and just so you won’t forget I am going to give us something to look for so that we can be sure that we are in the presence of angels.
In Islam we believe in Allah’s Angels:
Mothers are a simple way that we are reminded of their presence and influence in our lives. When mom is being a messenger—telling us what Allah loves and wants for us as human beings. She is being like Gabriel an archangel who serves as a messenger from Allah to the prophets.
When mothers teach us to care for and use the earth and its resources, she reminds us of Michael Allah’s angel of nature.
There are many angels in Islam. If we knew them all and the duties they perform for Allah APD, we can be sure that we will find situations we can reflect upon and honor our mommydears for their angelic behavior.
Every mother is angelic in her behavior towards us and in the way we think about them and in our memory.
I will leave you with theses word to Remember. A mother’s love is faithful. A mother’s love is true. A mother’s love is sometimes unconditional but most all she gives it to you.
If you have a mother living today, be grateful. If you think she is a good mother, Love her and honor her by giving her the respect a good mother deserves.
For those us who no longer have our mothers here with us, we know how much you miss them and realize how much like an angel she was. So love her and pray that she finds favor in Allah’s judgment. When you miss her remember her angelic qualities and perhaps as the song says, we will receive the ultimate blessing and Someday We’ll be Together , again.
Peace, Prayer & Forgiveness Day began as an initiative and brain child of Najah Haqiqah who comments, “after September 11, 2001 Americans began to look at their Muslim neighbors as potential terrorists rather than the different but friendly people they knew. I wanted to do something that we could all participate in the would show our commonality and start to heal as a nation from there.
"The idea of a day to reflect on “peace, prayer and forgiveness” seemed appropriate. The first year I began by sending out emails to see how far they would go, and how people would repond. I got all kind of responses. Some were positive and thankful while others were biting and far from encouraging. When I thought about the pain and suffering of the people who were negative, I knew I had hit upon something and resolved to continue. Each year we have endeavored to publicize the event on a larger scale, and each year it seems that more and more people are thinking about forgiveness.
"It is in this spirit that we ask the world to join us on this day of reflection. Despite the condition of your emotions about peace, prayer of forgiveness, we aske that you find a way to participated in the observance of this day in your way:
A good thought about the commitment:
"And he shall judge among nations and shall rebuke many people (strong nations afar off); and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.".....Isaiah 2/4 King James Version Holy Bible
We look forward to the day of the dissolution of weapons against human life and the time when war will be studied only in order that it may be avoided. Until then and beyond we hope that you will commemorate September 11th as a a day of peace .
